I3 dito: made of buff leather: blackened with leather loop. 30,00 Buff leather was the preferred kind of leather by the US Army for belts. Due to the fact that buff leather was and is expensive to produce the supply could not cover the demand at the beginning of the war. That is the reason why the government chose waxed or upper leather as substitute (mainly 1862 but in smaller scale until 1864) and later also bridle leather (from 1863 on). Around 1864 the supply of buff leather was again sufficient enough which is the reason why we find buff leather waist belts with brass belt keepers which were issued largely in 1864. |
